Altered Images & Experimental Embroidery - 3-5 days. Imagery on fabric and mark-making with thread are vehicles for self-expression and symbolic communication used in cultures around the world. In this workshop, fiber narratives tell stories that evolve as viewers read between the lines. Photographic and other images are combined with experimental embroidery to explore relationships between identity and perception. Students practice observation and abstraction techniques, develop concepts from digital photographs shot in class, learn a variety of ways to transfer images to fabric, and produce inkjet fabrics and other printed and painted fabrics. Stitching will be done by hand, not by machine, but previous embroidery experience is not necessary: Basic methods for thread control will be taught and an informal, additive, experimental approach to threadwork is encouraged. Note: The syllabus for the 5-day format of this workshop is available for review, and was approved by Augsburg College for a 2-credit graduate-level course scheduled at Shell Lake Arts Center in 2009.

Local Color - 3-5 days. Create fiber art inspired by the colors you see, the textures you find, and the images you capture with your digital camera as you explore an area with lots of local color. You'll use digital images to produce inkjet fabrics and enrich them with with additional surface design techniques like image transfers, transfer printing, heliographic printing, solar dyeing, and rubbings. Class will focus on developing concepts and themes from digital images and other sources of inspiration, including observation and abstraction exercises and other creativity catalysts. As you explore your chosen theme, you may embellish pieces with freestyle embroidery and beading, combine elements with your handwoven fabric, shape them into vessels, or develop ideas for quilts or garments. Bring your digital camera and your walking shoes!

Breaking Boundaries - 2-5 days. If you feel like there's an invisible fence that keeps you thinking inside the box, now's the time to break out. In this workshop, guided exercises and creativity catalysts build your fluency with design concepts that invite viewers into scenes you create with your fiber art. You'll learn about the picture plane and how to bend it to your will. You'll practice techniques for adding actual and perceived dimension to image elements, ways to use layers, sheers and shadows, and making frames that not only finish the edges but add to the story. Class time will be spent working on a series of small-scale two-dimensional pieces - jewelry, inchies, ATCs, small embroideries or mini art quilts - but ideas can be adapted to larger quilts, wearable art and even three-dimensional pieces.
