Sometimes called "top-down" or "half-hitch" coiling, Fuegian (foo-wage-ian) coiling is a little-known but versatile technique - the marriage of looping and coiling concepts. While inspired by the traditions of a nomadic hunting and fishing culture, these classes feature contemporary interpretations of Fuegian coiling. Most are organized around a project but focus on teaching techniques that can be adapted in many ways.
Funky Fuegian Coiling - 1 day. Fuegian coiling is simply looping worked over a core element. In this introduction to Fuegian technique, you'll stitch with multiple strands of yarn over strips of fulled (felted) wool fabric. You will also learn to use a willow shaping jig, shape a serpentine Fuegian flap, make a knotted looping closure for a velvet covered button, and use a 7-strand braiding jig to make the purse strap.
French Connection Pouch - 1 day. Fuegian coiling is twice the fun when you chase one luscious core (silk velvet) with another (smooth silk). The freeform motif introduces bachelor stitching and a simple bead looping edging. Add a toggled strap for attaching the cell phone-sized pouch to a purse or belt loop, or extend the strap to make a tiny shoulder purse or a large neck pouch.
Fudge Ripple Purse - 2 days. To build the base and sides of this clutch purse, you'll "chase the coil" as you loop over velvet and satin core elements. Add a band of bead looping for "bling," and a freeform flap that includes a bead looping variation. Class discussion and samples will inspire you to explore Fuegian coiling with many different materials.
Hot Pursuit Purse - 2 days. The versatile techniques in this project can be combined in many different way to create one-of-a-kind results. You'll use waxed linen and strips of velvet and satin fabric to work Fuegian coiling (looping over a core element), Fuegian chase coiling (which adds a contrasting core element), and freeform Fuegian, plus learn mosaic bead looping, filling and edging options, and three different ways to add handles or straps.
Pebbled Path Coiling - 1 day. Fuegian coiling meets bead looping in the spiral structure of a meditation pouch. You will pick up one bead at a time as you stitch from the base up over a silken core element. This class also teaches the contra bead looping neck cord and a peyote flap.
