Art Cloth & Story Vessels - 3-5 days. By the time the female brain develops in the area that governs spatial perceptions, many of us have decided we're 'no good at that.' Later on we're able to think in dimensions -- if we try. In this workshop, you will practice a process for translating ideas for forms from 3-D to 2-D and back to 3-D, making many patterns and models. You'll explore ways to create art cloth using fabric dyes, paints, printing methods, image transfer techniques, and lamination methods. Then you'll combine your vessel concepts and your fabric creations. Vessels and sculptural forms evolve during the construction process, which involves stitching by hand but no fine sewing skills are required. We also explore alternative construction methods and simple armatures. The class will focus on making conscious design choices that meld observation and imagination, and emphasize unifying elements in a format where the narrative evolves with the changing perspective of the viewer.  Note: The syllabus for the 5-day format of this workshop is available for review, and was approved by Augsburg College for a 2-credit graduate-level course I taught at Shell Lake Arts Center in 2008.

Constructed Vessels-- 1-2 days.
For thousands of years, basketmakers have made vessels by folding, cutting and stitching sheets of bark. In Constructed Vessels, we replace that bark with contemporary art cloth and fiber/paper laminates. In this workshop you'll learn a new way to conceive, model and build these hand-stitched sculptural forms.

Constrain & Construct: Fiber Vessels -- 1-2 days. This workshop uses the challenge of creative constraint as we conceive and model vessel forms. You'll use one of those models to produce a fused-and-stitched constructed vessel. In the process of converting flat fabric into a sculptural form, you'll learn to apply color using disperse dye transfer papers. Vessels will be stitched by hand, but you don't need fine sewing skills.

Mojo Vessels-- 2-3 days.
In this fusion of Constructed Vessels (above) and Fiber Mojo Surface Design (on this page), you'll learn techniques for using fabric paints, disperse dyes, and image transfers to make art cloth that transforms constructed vessels into story vessels.
