Dig into evolving  fiber traditions.

If you would like to discuss scheduling a workshop for your group, please email me. I look forward to working with you.

Art Cloth & Story Vessels - 2-5 days. By the time the female brain develops in the area that governs spatial perceptions, many of us have decided we're 'no good at that.' Later on we're able to think in dimensions -- if we try. This workshop will help you more than a pair of 3D glasses. First you will explore ways to create art cloth using non-toxic dyes, paints, printing methods, image transfer techniques, and lamination methods. Before you use that art cloth to create story vessels, you will practice a process for translating ideas for forms from 3-D to 2-D and back to 3-D, making models and patterns with simple materials like paper, muslin and duct tape. Vessels and sculptural forms will evolve during the construction process, which involves stitching by hand but no fine sewing skills are required. We will also explore alternative construction methods and simple armatures. The class will focus on making conscious design choices that meld observation and imagination, and emphasize unifying imagery and background elements in a format where narrative evolves with the changing perspective of the viewer.

Constructive Vessels-- 1 day.
Replace the bark in traditional folded and stitched vessels with contemporary art cloth, add a new/old approach to pattern making and you have constructive vessels. Through a series of guided exercises you'll learn to conceive and model 3-D forms. Then you'll use one of your own patterns as the starting point for a vessel. The construction process involves stitching (NOT fine sewing), and the form will evolve as your sculptural vessel emerges.

Mojo Vessels-- 2-5 days.
This workshop is a fusion of Constructive Vessels (above) and Fiber Mojo Surface Design. You'll sample a variety of surface design media including inks, oil sticks, and different types of textile paints, and learn other Fiber Mojo and image transfer techniques as time allows. Using those techniques, you will prepare fabric for Mojo Vessels. Then you'll use paper, muslin and duct tape to create models and 2-dimensional patterns for 3-dimensional vessels of your own design, which you will construct from your prepared fabric.

Basketry for The New Ice Age-- 2-3 days. Neolithic basketmakers, using materials they gathered and prepared themselves, could craft vessels that would even hold water. Can we, with 20,000 years of 'development,' be as creative and resourceful using the materials of this age? We'll find out, using looping and coiling techniques with recycled plastic shopping bags, thrift shop finds and other reclaimed materials in this process-oriented workshop.
