About One Thousand Tales
I listen to a lot of books on tape while I'm working in my studio. This piece was inspired by the Tales of the Arabian Nights, where the sheik's bride must capture his imagination with her stories to keep from being beheaded at dawn. Her stories are so deftly intertwined, so cunningly linked together that one flows into the next and the listener can't bear the thought of not knowing what will happen next. When I do this kind of stitching, I have an idea of how everything will come together but, because of the imperfect nature of the natural materials I work with, I also have to make things up as I go along. When I finish a piece like this, where I'm happy about the way individual elements are linked together, I feel like I've told a story myself.
