About Three Score and Ten
"A coiled piece like this requires a certain amount of patience and faith that, in the end, I'll be able to shape these random motifs into a pleasing form. No one is more surprised that I can do this than I am. Patience was a hard thing for me to learn, but not nearly as difficult as learning to give up control and let other forces guide my actions. When I was younger, I wanted to know where I was going and how I was going to get there and exactly how long it would take. But from my current vantage point, which is past the midpoint of the biblical age of three score and ten, I see patterns in life that I couldn't appreciate back then. When I stitch a piece like this, I think about how each moment is connected to what came before and what is yet to come and I marvel at how side trips that seem to go nowhere add richness to the journey." This piece was included in Baskets Now: USA in 2002 at the Arkansas Art Center.
