Altered Images for Fiber Art--1-3 days. Learn to create unique focal images and background elements for wearable art, beading, embroidery, quilting, dolls, bookmaking and more. In this hands-on workshop you'll sample many ways to transfer images to cotton, silk, leather, "fiber phyllo," Ultrasuede and Lacy's Stiff Stuff using non-toxic transfer agents that remain flexible and easy to stitch through. You'll learn techniques to help you freely combine, alter, enhance, deconstruct, reconstruct, mix and otherwise manipulate images and backgrounds, and gain confidence in moving ideas from your imagination to fabric. As time allows you'll create layered imagery, learn to make Slapdash Screens and Transparency Stamps, discover Voodoo Applique, and learn to create simple but expressive figures and faces for your fiber art. You'll leave with a valuable reference handbook and many ideas to pursue on your own.
Complete Fabrication: Soft Jewelry That Tells A Story - 3 Day. Learn to transform photographs, drawings, doodles, collages, and found objects into image-based adornments. In class you'll sample a variety of non-toxic image transfer techniques that remain flexible and easy to stitch through, use common home office technology to print some elements directly to fabric, and add 'fiber mojo' (simple fabric painting and printing techniques) to dress up other components. You'll complete some pieces in class and leave with additional components to finish at your leisure.
Complete Fabrication: Story Cloth & Creativity-- 2-5 days. In this process-based creativity class, we'll take inspiration from WWII silk escape and evasion maps, treasure maps, 'the color of the day' and other textiles with hidden meanings as we create contemporary art cloth. You'll learn to use creativity warm-ups and readiness rituals, design catalysts, collage exercises and reflective writing techniques to help you map out and distill a tale to interpret on a silk story cloth you can wear as a shawl. You'll create imagery and use a scanner and inkjet products to print it directly to silk fabric, use Fiber Mojo techniques to add color magic to base elements, and learn ways to unify imagery and backgrounds. To complete your story shawl you'll use applique, beading techniques and silk ribbon embroidery that add subtext as well as embellishment.
Fiber Mojo--3 hours to 3 days. Learn quick, simple ways to add magic to plain-Jane fabrics, threads, and even silk ribbon. You'll start by sampling a variety of surface design media, including inks, oil sticks, and different types of textile paints. As time allows you will design and print with original stamps, create Slapdash Screens & Stencils, and make Party String Printing Plates. You'll learn Boo-Hey Methods of altering fabric using recycled metals and stuff from the produce aisle or the compost pile. You'll explore layering to add depth and interest to fiber art as you make, mix and remix elements and use an inkjet scanner/printer to magically transform them into Voodoo Applique components. Be prepared for fast-paced fun.
Image Transfer for Fiber Art - 1 day. Learn to transform photographs, drawings and doodles into image-based wearable art. In this fast-paced sampling class you'll get hands-on practice with 20 or more transfers, using non-toxic transfer agents that remain flexible and easy to stitch through. You will not complete jewelry in class, but will leave with a pile of colorful components and complete instructions for finishing them at your leisure.
