New Age Looping - 1- to 5-day Workshops
New Age Looping is a contemporary interpretation of a technique older than weaving or knitting that creates a structure so stable it can't unravel, so logical you don't need to follow a pattern. Once you learn the basics, it's relaxing work even when you expect frequent distractions. Classes emphasize tension control and structural understanding, and help students at all levels learn to design their own projects. Additional topics, depending on the time available, are introduced in a progressive fashion and may include special topics listed below as well as other variations in needle entry positions, stitch groupings, spiral versus flat looping, flip turns and returns, shaping options, working with and without molds, anchor options, base and border variations, purl looping, intarsia and color management, knotless and knotted stitch variations, combination stitches, skipped stitch patterning, complex looping, layering and double-wall constructions, and looping over a core (also known as Fuegian coiling).

Bead Looping. Unlike bead knitting or crochet, where beads are strung in advance according to a planned pattern, in bead looping you pick up one bead at a time and create a structure can't unravel. You can make color and design choices as you stitch, working without charts or patterns. Mosaic bead looping classes explore applications for beaded fabrics and freeform constructions.

Burundi Looping. In complex looping, the working thread follows a path that intersects with previously made stitches on multiple rows of the fabric. These single-element constructions generally produce fabrics with a much different appearance and less elasticity than simple knotless netting. Learn the Burundi form of complex looping, including a two-color variation creates vertical stripes in a horizontal structure.

Cross-Knit Looping. Learn cross-knit looping, which is sometimes known as cross-looping or needle knitting. At a glance it's indistinguishable from stockinette stitch in knitting, but cross-knit looping will not unravel.

Freeform, Textural &
Scrumble Looping. Learn freeform filling strategies, how to "scrumble" motifs, how to create dimensional textures, and how to combine looping elements. Work improvisationally to create functional items like hats, bags, flaps, cuffs and pockets as well as sculptural embroidery.
