About Perennial
"Construction was followed by an unseasonable winter. A top layer of bare soil would thaw, and the improvised boardwalk out to my studio was like surfing on mud. That spring we had no money to bring in topsoil or anything else that would make our sandy soil look alive. But a kind neighbor brought me two loads of old horse manure to pitch over the brown, and before long we had the beautiful green of quackgrass and dandelions. Nothing is tougher or more resourceful than those plants, except the people who live in these parts. Flattened, they spring back up. Mowed down, they grow with more vigor. They hold this thin soil in place, hoping someday their kids can afford to move back."
